LEAD SWIM INSTRUCTOR

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Swim Program Supervisor

GENERAL FUNCTION:
Ensure safety of all swimmers and assist in classes and other activities conducted in the swimming pool. Supervise lifeguards in absence of Swim Program Supervisor. Implement directives of Swim Program Supervisor to ensure an effective and fun Swim Program is being run. Cover swim program at both Carver Ranches and Levine Clubs as needed, traveling, and working at either pool as needed.

JOB SEGMENTS:

  1. Enforce all pool rules.
  2. See that boys and girls shower and are clean before swimming.
  3. Assist with swimming classes and tests.
  4. Help organize games and special events in pool.
  5. Lead Swim Instructor is in charge of pool when Swim Program Supervisor is out of pool area.
  6. Observe all safety precautions at all times.
  7. Assign staff or personally stand outside of restroom door whenever member(s) is in the restroom.
  8. Help maintain the pool and swimmers’ records.
  9. Assist in other areas of the club when pool is closed due to weather or other issues. (appropriate shoes and attire required.)
  10. Participate in Staff Meetings and Conferences.
  11. Assist in keeping members aware of the swimming schedule.
  12. Work assigned hours to maximize pool use; including morning hours during Swim Central program operation.
  13. Report to work at either the Levine/Slaughter (North Lauderdale) or Carver Ranches (West Park) pool as assigned by Swim Program Supervisor. Sometimes you may be required to work at both pools in the same day.
  14. Other duties may be assigned to meet the needs of the Boys & Girls Club.

 

KNOW HOW:
Must be a current Certified Swim Instructor and Certified Lifeguard with current First Aid and CPR certificates; must have and maintain a Certified Swim Instructor and be a Certified Lifeguard with current First Aid and CPR certification and have Red Cross Life Saving Rating. Minimum requirements include:

  • At least 3 years of experience as an instructor or lifeguard.
  • Must demonstrate safety as the highest priority.
  • Must have ability to teach large volumes of children with ages ranging from 6-18.
  • Must be able to command control of classes; must be able to organize swim class schedules.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must be able to assist in training new swim teachers and lifeguards.
  • Must be able to teach front stroke, back stroke, breaststroke, butterfly and treading water.
  • Must be able to communicate well with staff, students, and parents.
  • Must see and embrace the long-term vision of the Club’s Swim Academy program.
  • Must be able to fill out various skill report forms associated with BGCBC grant programs which may require computer skills.
  • Must be able to work closely with the Swim Program Supervisor in building a world-class BCBGC Swim Program which may include a swim team.
  • Must be able to manage the entire Swim Program in the absence of the Swim Program Supervisor.
  • Must be a good role-model for other staff members and the students.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Position requires a high energy level, and ability to perform multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities. Superior interpersonal abilities are needed. Ability to get along with diverse personalities, at all times displaying tact, maturity, and flexibility. Good reasoning abilities and sound judgment. Physical requirements include sight, hearing, and standing for four plus hours per day. Skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing. Position requirements include:

  • Walking–constantly required to walk (for up to 4 hours) on the pool deck or floor and in the Club as needed.
  • Talking – constantly required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word (leading classes, directing swimmers, guiding staff, etc.)
  • Hearing – frequently required to work in a loud environment.
  • Sight – position requires both close and distance visual acuity for paperwork and monitoring children.
  • Standing – required to stand for sustained periods of time while monitoring children and leading lessons.
  • Sitting – occasionally required to sit for up to 2 hours.
  • Bending – occasionally required to bend (picking items up off of the floor, removing food items from the fridge and warming oven, etc.)
  • Pushing & pulling – required to push & pull (retrieving life vests, and other items, assisting swimmers, sweeping pool deck as needed, etc.)
  • Fingering – occasionally required to type for extended periods of time (answering emails, writing reports, creating program documents, etc.)
  • Lifting – occasionally required to lift/move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Skills essential for successful communication include speaking and writing.
  • Worker will be subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.

 

EFFECT ON END RESULTS:
The goal is to have a safe and fun swimming program that teaches all non-swimmers how to swim.
