Boys and Girls Club Broward County Corporate Board

Annie Mecias-Murphy
Board Chair
JA & M Contractors

Annie Mecias-Murphy is the co-owner and president of JA&M Developing Corporation, a family-owned general contracting firm established in 2005. The concept of the American dream was crucial to Dr. Mecias-Murphy when she first began her journey into the construction industry. She was exposed to the area of construction by her parents, in particular her father, who began working in construction from the time he emigrated from Cuba in 1969. After spending several years in the teaching and counseling field, she decided to start over in the trades. She had acquired experience in construction from the time she was a child working with her father and began as a construction laborer, but soon mastered the skills of the trade, empowering her to pursue valuable career opportunities.

Dr. Mecias-Murphy simultaneously pursued postgraduate education, earning a Doctor of Philosophy with minors in English, political science, and theology at Barry University in 2007.

JA&M Developing Corporation has more than tripled in value since its creation, a figure that Dr. Mecias-Murphy holds up as another example of the American dream in action. The company offers full-service general contracting for residential and commercial projects, including municipal projects, and turnkey shell service for rough carpentry, stucco, masonry and steel. Among other projects, JA&M Developing Corporation has completed projects such as 2000 Ocean in Hallandale Beachm, Florida; Block 40 in Hollywood, Florida; Terminal Four of the Ft. Lauderdale airport; and other municipal structures for the cities of Plantation and Miami, Florida. Dr. Mecias-Murphy attributes her success to the drive and work ethic instilled in her by her parents and the resiliency that she has gained from her faith. She credits her professional and educational mentors with helping her develop the skills and vision needed to succeed in business, and hopes to be able to pass the same lessons on to others from her current position. She advises that the key to succeeding in any field is approaching both the job and the people with respect, regardless of your differences, and that developing the ability to recognize and organize talent in others will go a long way. In recognition of her outstanding work on behalf of the construction industry and the impact that JA&M Developing Corporation has had on the Florida real estate and building markets, Dr. Mecias-Murphy was named Woman of the Year and presented with an Excellence in Construction Award in 2016. She is a member of the executive committee of the Builders and Contractors Construction Association.

As a part of her commitment to “passing along” the American dream to others, Dr. Mecias-Murphy sits on the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County and is active in the Epic Foundation, Metro Life Church, and several other area children’s charities. She hopes to one day be able to run for public office in order to better serve the communities she lives and works in. When she is not focused on her work, Dr. Mecias-Murphy enjoys spending time with her family and playing sports.

Great American Storage LLC

Josie is a seasoned business executive with over 35 years of experience. In 2014, she joined with David Fegley in founding Storage Development Partners, LLC. Josie’s primary area of focus is on site selection, building design and feasibility – including business case development (unit mix, rental rates and concessions, occupancy, operating expenses, ROI analysis and exit strategies), selection of professional skills including the architect, the engineer, and the store management company, and ultimately ensuring the success of the project. Her primary areas of responsibility are projects and clients based in the southeast and northeast sections of the United States. Recognized as being an emerging industry leader, Josie has presented at the International Self-Storage Exposition in Las Vegas, NV one of the largest self-storage gatherings in the world.

Josie started Storage Development Partners, LLC and her own real estate and business development company, JH FL Holdings, LLC from National Land Partners, LLC, one of the country’s oldest buyers and sellers of recreational land in the United States, and its affiliate Inland Management where she served as Chief Executive Officer from 2005-2014. Annual revenue during her leadership period exceeded $350 Million and at its peak the company employed over 250 people across thirteen states. In addition to her day-to-day executive management responsibilities, she led the creation of the company’s finance company which purchased over $500 Million in assets from the FDIC. She also served as the Internal Relations manager for the Company’s $110 Million timber investment management organization fund.

Prior to joining National Land Partners, Josie enjoyed a distinguished career with International Business Machines where she held numerous finance and executive positions in the United States and Europe. She started her IBM career as a financial analyst in the Real Estate and Construction Division and rose to Director of Software Pricing. In that capacity, she was responsible for world-wide software product pricing and strategies. Josie also served as Director of Global Customer Offerings, IBM (Paris, France) and oversaw the company’s special bid organization for its top 100 global accounts, directing and securing over $6 Billion in transactions each year.
