AIR SHOW LEAVES IONOSPHERE MEMBERS ON CLOUD NINE
Ionosphere Program of Flight members from the Nan Knox Club, got a behind the scenes look at some of the pilots and planes participating in the Fort Lauderdale Air Show that took place May 4-5. Ben Rogers, from the Fort Lauderdale Transportation Department, Rufus James and Carlton Harrison, the Director and Assistant Director of the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, invited members from the Ionosphere program at the Nan Knox Boys & Girls Club to meet some of the Air Shows’ pilots and learn about their airplanes. Aerobatic stunt pilot Mike Wiskus talked to members and showed them his modified single engine plane before firing up the engine and taking off for a practice flight. The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team pilots and their vintage SNJ WWII planes also welcomed the kids, answered questions and allowed them to sit in the cockpit of one of the planes. The kids were able to touch, hear, smell and see planes and pilots in action. They also received parting gifts of back packs with gifts including tickets to the “drop zone” for Saturday and Sunday to see the whole show up close. This experienced immersed our kids in aviation and they have been on cloud nine since attending the activities. We send a heartfelt THANK YOU to Banyan Air Services’ at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, for arranging and hosting this awesome event!

28TH ANNUAL FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
For the past 27 years, the Fort Lauderdale International Auto Show has helped to raise more than $5 million for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. These valuable funds help our organization promote good character, leadership development and academic success for our 12,000 plus Club members at our 11 Club locations in Broward County. South Florida’s car dealers gathered at the Broward County Convention Center to showcase the newest 2019 and 2020 models, many for the first time. The annual show afforded everyone the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat of some of the auto industry’s newest models such as the 2020 Toyota Corolla, Lincoln Aviator, Kia Telluride and many more. There was something for everyone, as Honda showcased their motorcycles, while Toyota and Chevrolet offered Ride-n-Drive test drives just outside the Convention Center. We owe a tremendous thank you to Rita and Rick Case, who founded this event for our youth. Their continued support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County for this event is very much appreciated.
33RD ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC
On Friday, March 29th, over 40 foursomes gathered at Jacaranda Golf Club, for the 33rd Annual Golf Classic, founded by the late Gary Rotella and his brother Bill. One of the longest standing events for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, this year’s event was chaired by Michael Hotte, Chris Rotella, Joe LaRocca, Jr. and a fantastic committee who planned a fun and successful event. Golfers enjoyed a cart-side BBQ before heading out on the course. This year, golfers were able to purchase a package that included three games that would offer an advantage towards the foursome’s final score. Participating golfers could wear a colorful tutu to shoot from the ladies tee, the bazooka cannon tee shot and the 150 marker for your first shot. These games definitely provided some comedy on the course and raised additional funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Immediately after the round, golfers enjoyed a delicious buffet and bid on some incredible silent and live auction items including Boca Raton Resort & Club stay, Fisher Island excursion, Park City vacation and much more! First place on the west course went to: Leland Hicks, Jeff Benef, Jason Schmdit and Blair Adams. First place on the east course went to: AJ Meyer, Joe Kovac and two other guests of the ANF Foursome.
