72 BGCBC FAMILIES COMPLETE FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAM

The Family Strengthening Program (FSP) is an evidence-based nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk and general population families.  The program is designed to increase family cohesion, communication, and organization by teaching children and parents problem solving, resilience, and how to improve positive interactions. With a grant from the Children’s Services Council, this is BGCBC’s second year of successfully implementing the FSP in our Clubs.  To date, we served 72 families at the following Clubs: Levine/Slaughter, Lauderhill, Nan Knox, Rick & Rita Case, Marti Huizenga and Carver Ranches.  During each session, parents and their children are provided a meal, and then Group Leaders spend the first hour teaching beneficial skills to parents and children separately.  The second hour is used for combined instruction where parents and children can practice family strengthening techniques with the assistance of the Group Leaders. FSP is found to significantly improve parenting skills and family relationships, reduce problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance.

2017 FLORIDA YOUTH OF THE YEAR CELEBRATION

Being selected as a Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Youth of the Year is the highest honors that a member can receive within the Boys & Girls Clubs program. This year we had the privilege to accompany Jasmin M. for the Florida Youth of the Year Celebration in Orlando, FL, April 6-8, 2017. The Florida Youth of the Year Celebration is where the selection process takes place to determine who will represent the Boys & Girls Club for the Regional Youth of the Year. We are extremely proud of Jasmine, she has made so many contributions to her family, school, community, and to her home Club, the Dr. Harold Reitman Boys & Girls Club. We want to celebrate the opportunity that we had to have all 11 Youth of the Years from each Club go to the Florida Youth of the Year Celebration to support Jasmine during the interviews and also represent Boys & Girls Club of Broward County in this excellent state event. This year, Youth of the Years and alternate from each Club, received the great opportunity to attend the Dale Carnegie Leadership Course. The course allowed the youth to gain knowledge and confidence in public speaking. The tools that they learned in the course allowed the members to be prepared for a successful future.
