Life & Resiliency

Resilience is the ability to adapt to challenging life experiences so we can live the life we imagine. To be resilient, one needs to be able to cope with changes and challenges including loss and grief, make connections through respectful relationships, know when/where/how to ask for help, think optimistically, care for oneself and others, and utilize positive self-talk. Resilient people:

  • Safely address challenges such as economic stress, divorce, physical illness, and aging.
  • Have a positive image of the future and see brighter days ahead.
  • Have solid goals and a desire to achieve them.
  • Maintain healthy relationships and don’t bow to peer pressure.
  • Feel confident and empowered because they focus their time and energy on changing the things they can control.
  • Don’t dwell on failures; they learn from their mistakes and move forward.

THE IMPACT OF STRESS ON ADOLESCENTS

Adolescence is naturally full of stressors due to the seemingly endless developmental, social, familial, and educational changes we experience as we learn and grow. This generation of adolescents must deal with additional stressors not faced by previous generations such as mass shootings, online social pressure, lack of unstructured/free time, and pandemic-related stressors such as social isolation, increased family tension, and learning loss. When adolescents are overloaded with stress, it may lead to anxiety, aggressive behaviors, withdrawal, physical illness, or poor coping skills such as alcohol and/or drug use.

The Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS) is administered to middle and high school students each Spring. The results from the 2025 FYSAS for Broward County clearly show that adolescents need our help to cultivate the life and coping skills they need to become resilient so they can face life’s challenges in a healthy, safe manner.

Where Skill-Building, Prevention, and Fun Intersect

Our mission is the focal point of all programming within our Clubs. Although our programming is naturally infused with opportunities to learn and practice life, coping, and resilience skills, we intentionally implement diverse, targeted programs that align precisely with the needs of our members and our programming goals and objectives.

A multi-faceted fine arts program for members ages 6 to 18 that allows our youth to express themselves creatively while developing self-confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and a sense of hope.

A unique approach to bullying designed through a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE.) Geared for youth ages 11 to 13, the program teaches youth how to identify, understand, and effectively communicate their emotions as an alternative to aggressive behavior; build awareness to walk away when someone is mistreating them, know their limits and boundaries as well as be able to communicate them to another; and express and assert themselves when needed.

An evidence-based, internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program. Funded by Children’s Services Council for Club members ages 6 to 12 and their families, the 14-week program increases family cohesion, communication, and organization by helping participants build problem-solving, resilience, and positive communication skills. Each class includes a family meal, individualized classes for parents and youth, and a combined session where parents and children practice the techniques they learned under the supervision of the instructors. In addition to improving parenting skills and family relationships, the Family Strengthening Program has been proven to reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and substance abuse in children and improve social competencies and school performance.

A multi-year, evidence-based program developed by researchers at Arizona State University and designated as a SELect program, the highest rating given by The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL.) It incorporates multiple methods such as thematic lessons, activities, stories, and games to bolster youth’s social and emotional growth through all five SEL competencies. By focusing on peer relationship processes, the program contributes to their academic success and provides youth with ongoing opportunities to engage in dialogue and decision-making about the issues related to the Club community.

Created by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, this program guides our male Club members through a personal growth journey. Hands-on activities and open discussions reinforce character, leadership, and positive behavior skills.

Comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum that promotes competencies proven to reduce aggression and behavior challenges in school-aged youth. The program includes grade-specific curricula with short, flexible lessons designed to meet those youth’s needs and developmental milestones.

A suite of targeted, evidence-based programs and topic-specific modules through Boys & Girls Clubs of America created to help youth ages 6 to 15 develop healthy decision-making attitudes and skills. Each program and module reflect contemporary youth development best practices, including discussion, role-play, and hands-on activities to practice resilience and refusal skills, develop assertiveness, strengthen decision-making skills, and analyze media and peer influences. The suite includes SMART Moves: Emotional Wellness, SMART Moves: Core, SMART Girls, SMART Girl/Smart $$$, SMART Moves Healthy Relationships, and a series of topic-specific SMART Moves modules, including SMART Moves Substance Use.

Through a new partnership with Volta Music Foundation, we are thrilled to offer violin classes to 120 Club members in 2nd through 5th grade at five of our Club sites. This is a 14-week program that teaches members how to hold and care for the violin and to play beginner-level music. In addition to teaching music skills, the classes teach and build vital life and coping skills. Music helps youth learn how to regulate their emotions and can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Playing music with others teaches teamwork, effective communication, empathy, self-awareness, problem-solving, and cooperation.

New for Summer 2025. This flexible, evidence-based curriculum for grades K-12 provides simple, hands-on strategies and resources to motivate the unmotivated youth, support youth with trauma, improve engagement, and increase academic success. Essential life skills such as improved decision-making, impulse control, plugging into support systems, etc. are taught and reinforced through the curriculum by the engaging and creative use of music, hands-on activities, stories, and multimedia.

A multi-faceted, year-round program designed to address the needs of middle school-age youth. Through targeted programming, family events, and support sessions with a Youth Success coach, participants in this program will strengthen their protective factors by developing resiliency, a positive outlook, healthy family dynamics, pro-social relationships, positive decision-making skills, strong community attachment, and academic success.

RESOURCES FOR CAREGIVERS

Caregivers who model positive life, coping, and resiliency skills and create practice opportunities for their children at home ensure that their children have the opportunity to learn and grow as individuals along a path to success. Furthermore, families that practice these skills together will have better communication with each other and be able to work together to resolve family conflicts.

The resources and activities below are designed to support the growth and well-being of both our members and their families. We hope you all enjoy them!
