Honoring Don Medalie

February 3, 2025 HONORING Don Medalie It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we share the news of the passing of our beloved and longest tenured board member, Don Medalie. Don was more than just a dedicated leader on our board; he was a true champion for the youth we serve, a source of inspiration, and a steadfast friend to all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Don joined the BGCBC board in 1976 and for over 49 years he worked diligently and passionately to serve those in our community. After being with BGCBC for so many decades, we’ve come to truly understand the lasting impact he had on the community and the families we serve. His dedication, vision, and leadership have contributed to who we are today. While we mourn the loss of a valued board member and friend, we also take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Don’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. In honor of Don, we will continue his legacy by empowering our youth in Broward County through education, mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement. By fostering a supportive environment, we aim to inspire the next generation to carry his vision forward.
From Blue Doors to Great Futures: Delanie Lugo’s Inspiring Journey with Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County

January 16, 2025 From Blue Doors to Great Futures: Delanie Lugo’s Inspiring Journey with Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Delanie Lugo’s story is a testament to the transformative power of community support, hard work, and resilience. Growing up in Miami, Florida, Delanie’s life took a pivotal turn when she moved to Broward County and joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County (BGCBC) as a teenager. Her journey from a Club member who joined as a teen to a scholarship recipient, Youth of the Year, and eventually a college graduate on a full-ride scholarship is nothing short of inspiring. A Turning Point: Joining the Boys & Girls Clubs Like many teens facing the challenges of adolescence, Delanie Lugo was looking for a place where she could belong, grow, and thrive. It was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County that offered her that opportunity. The organization, known for empowering young people to realize their potential, became a second home for Delanie. It was here that she discovered her passion for leadership and community service—two values that would shape her path for years to come. At the Boys & Girls Club, Delanie not only participated in programs designed to help youth develop academically and socially, but she also engaged in leadership opportunities, like Keystone club president, that allowed her to grow as an individual. She thrived in an environment where mentors and peers alike encouraged her to push past boundaries and aim higher. Youth of the Year: A Major Milestone In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Delanie was named Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County for the Rita & Rick Case Club. This prestigious award is given annually to a young person who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to their community. For Delanie, being named Youth of the Year was more than just an accolade; it was a reflection of her hard work, perseverance, and the strong values instilled in her by the BGCBC. A Scholarship for a Bright Future Delanie’s determination and accomplishments didn’t go unnoticed. Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County’s ongoing commitment to helping young people succeed, Delanie was awarded the Rita and Rick Case Endowment Scholarship that would change the trajectory of her life. The scholarship, which covered her full tuition to Nova Southeastern University, provided Delanie with the opportunity to pursue higher education without the heavy financial burden that often discourages many young people from attending college. This young powerhouse’s journey didn’t end with a college degree. Her success is a powerful reminder of the impact that local organizations, mentors, and communities can have on a young person’s life. As a graduate, Delanie entered the workforce at BGCBC headquarters as the College Readiness Coordinator a renewed sense of purpose, ready to give back to the community that had supported her all along. As Delanie continues to make strides in her career and personal life, her story remains a beacon of hope and a powerful motivator for future generations. Watch Delanie’s story

September Wellness Wisdom: Suicide Prevention Awareness

September is Suicide Prevention Month This is a crucial time to shine a light on mental health and work together to prevent suicide. Suicide is complicated and may affect anyone regardless of age or background, but it is also preventable. This month, we invite you to focus on breaking down the stigmas surrounding mental health challenges, educating ourselves about the warning signs of suicide, and fostering open communication. Break Down Stigmas & Foster Open Communication Stigmas related to suicide often silence those struggling with thoughts of suicide or other mental health challenges. Encourage your family, friends, and colleagues to share their feelings and experiences without fear of judgment. By speaking openly about mental health and challenging harmful stereotypes, we can create a more supportive and understanding community. One conversation can save a life. Know the Warning Signs of Suicide Key suicide warning signs include talking about feeling hopeless or trapped, withdrawing from social activities, changes in eating or sleeping habits, extreme mood swings, using drugs or alcohol more often, expressing feelings of being a burden, giving away important possessions, and making plans or researching ways to die. If you recognize these or other signs of suicide in a friend or loved one, reach out to them with compassion and encourage them to seek professional help. Together, we can make a difference and help prevent suicide. Immediate help is available by calling or texting #988 or chatting at 988lifeline.org for 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who help anyone experiencing mental health challenges, including thoughts of suicide, substance use crises, and emotional distress. If you would like more information or to speak to one of our Life & Resiliency Skills Coordinators about connecting to free or insurance-based mental health services, please contact Michelle White, Life & Resiliency Skills Director at mwhite@bgcbc.org or 754-300-9422. You are not alone. Reach out, speak up, and let’s create a world where everyone feels supported.
