Nicole Melendez: From Club Kid to Mentor: A Path to Leadership at Boys & Girls Clubs

Nicole Melendez

January 16, 2025 Nicole Melendez: From Club Kid to Mentor: A Path to Leadership at Boys & Girls Clubs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6u-JDkGZpg Nicole Melendez still remembers the first time she walked through the doors of the Boys & Girls Club. As a young kid, she joined simply to play sports—never realizing that this place would one day shape her future, her leadership, and her purpose. By middle school, she wasn’t just stopping by—the Club had become her second home. Her First Job: Learning Leadership at the Club At just 15 years old, the Club gave Nicole her first opportunity to step into a leadership role—as a Junior Staff member, making $4.67 per hour. This was more than just a job; it was a lesson in responsibility, work ethic, and personal growth. The Club was no longer just a place she went to—it was a place where she was learning how to lead, how to inspire, and how to push herself to grow every day. She was fortunate to have two mentors who truly shaped who she is today—Kristina Balog, her Club Director, and Jason Cooper, her Gym Director. They saw something in her that she hadn’t yet recognized in herself, and they pushed her to embrace leadership and strive for excellence. Because of them, she began stepping outside of her comfort zone and participating in every program the Club had to offer. A Lesson in Resilience: Youth of the Year At 16 years old, she was encouraged to run for Youth of the Year (YOY), the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. That first year, she wasn’t selected. It was disappointing, but instead of feeling defeated, it lit a fire inside her. She was determined to push herself, grow stronger, and earn that title. The following year, she came back more prepared, more confident, and more determined than ever. That year, she was honored to be selected as Youth of the Year for her Club—not just once, but during both her junior and senior years of high school. It was during this time that she realized her future wasn’t just about finding a career—it was about making a difference. Becoming the First in Her Family to Go to College With the guidance and support of her Club, she took a leap of faith and moved to Florida—a decision that would change her life forever. The Club not only prepared her academically and professionally, but it gave her the courage to step into the unknown. One of her proudest achievements? Becoming the first in her family to go to college! Everything the Boys & Girls Club taught her—resilience, leadership, responsibility, and confidence—prepared her for that moment. Coming Full Circle: Giving Back as a Leader During college, she began volunteering for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Broward County, and even though it wasn’t her home Club, she felt that same sense of connection, belonging, and purpose. Shortly after, she was offered her first full-time position as a Social Recreation Coordinator, marking the beginning of her professional career with the organization that had once shaped her as a child. Over the past nine years, she has been fortunate to grow within the organization, holding multiple roles that allowed her to expand her leadership, drive impact, and help shape the experiences of the next generation of Club members. And now, standing as the Vice President of Strategy, she is reminded every day that the Club is more than just a place—it’s a catalyst for opportunity, a second home, and a family that never stops believing in her. At the Jim & Jan Moran Club, part of Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, Markus found a safe space to explore his love for music. What began as a chance to try something new soon became a lifelong passion that would define his career. Receiving the saxophone marked a pivotal moment in Markus’s life, but it was the encouragement and mentorship he received that truly set him on his path. Mr. Curtis a beloved figure at the Boys & Girls Clubs. Under his guidance, Markus grew socially as a young man and learned the value of discipline, creativity, and, most importantly, the power of music to connect people and express emotions. The lessons he learned at the Club help shape his growth into manhood and his music career along with his wonderful parents. From Blue Doors to Great Futures: Delanie Lugo’s Inspiring Journey with Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County

great futures

January 16, 2025 From Blue Doors to Great Futures: Delanie Lugo’s Inspiring Journey with Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Delanie Lugo’s story is a testament to the transformative power of community support, hard work, and resilience. Growing up in Miami, Florida, Delanie’s life took a pivotal turn when she moved to Broward County and joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County (BGCBC) as a teenager. Her journey from a Club member who joined as a teen to a scholarship recipient, Youth of the Year, and eventually a college graduate on a full-ride scholarship is nothing short of inspiring. A Turning Point: Joining the Boys & Girls Clubs Like many teens facing the challenges of adolescence, Delanie Lugo was looking for a place where she could belong, grow, and thrive. It was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County that offered her that opportunity. The organization, known for empowering young people to realize their potential, became a second home for Delanie. It was here that she discovered her passion for leadership and community service—two values that would shape her path for years to come. At the Boys & Girls Club, Delanie not only participated in programs designed to help youth develop academically and socially, but she also engaged in leadership opportunities, like Keystone club president, that allowed her to grow as an individual. She thrived in an environment where mentors and peers alike encouraged her to push past boundaries and aim higher. Youth of the Year: A Major Milestone In recognition of her outstanding achievements, Delanie was named Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County for the Rita & Rick Case Club. This prestigious award is given annually to a young person who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to their community. For Delanie, being named Youth of the Year was more than just an accolade; it was a reflection of her hard work, perseverance, and the strong values instilled in her by the BGCBC.  A Scholarship for a Bright Future Delanie’s determination and accomplishments didn’t go unnoticed. Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County’s ongoing commitment to helping young people succeed, Delanie was awarded the Rita and Rick Case Endowment Scholarship that would change the trajectory of her life. The scholarship, which covered her full tuition to Nova Southeastern University, provided Delanie with the opportunity to pursue higher education without the heavy financial burden that often discourages many young people from attending college. This young powerhouse’s journey didn’t end with a college degree. Her success is a powerful reminder of the impact that local organizations, mentors, and communities can have on a young person’s life. As a graduate, Delanie entered the workforce at BGCBC headquarters as the College Readiness Coordinator a renewed sense of purpose, ready to give back to the community that had supported her all along.  As Delanie continues to make strides in her career and personal life, her story remains a beacon of hope and a powerful motivator for future generations.
