Celebrating Excellence: Join us for HBCU Day

HBCU Day 2024 In the heart of Black History Month, a significant celebration is on the horizon – an event dedicated to honoring the rich legacy and impact of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs). As we gear up for HBCU Day at Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward, it’s essential to reflect on the origins of HBCUs, the importance of sustaining them, and the broader significance of education within the African American community. Who Will Be Attending: Florida Memorial University, FAMU NAA Broward Alumni Chapter, Edward Waters University and Bethune Cookman University will all be in attendance! Bring your official transcript for potential same day acceptance! These institutions, born out of a tumultuous history, have played a pivotal role in shaping the future of countless African American individuals and communities. At the event on Monday Feb 19th, we’ll also have the opportunity to listen to an excellent group of alumni from different HBCUs sharing their insights and experiences. Event Details: Event: Boys & Girls Club of Broward County HBCU Day Date: February 19, 2024 Time: 12:30PM- 4:00PM Location: Leo Goodwin Foundation Teen Center Address: 7201 Kimberly Boulevard North Lauderdale, FL 33068 Panelist: –Reuben Rifin – Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions Duke UniversityBethune Cookman University –Antonio Burgess – District Coordinator at Broward County Schools Florida A&M University –Cornelie E. Antenor – COMET RPS Lead Engineer at NASA Florida A&M University –Johnnie Henry – Admissions Counselor at Edward Waters University Edward Waters University –Kiara Hill – Grants Administrator & Compliance Manager at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Spellman University The Birth of Historically Black Colleges & Universities: The establishment of Historically Black Colleges & Universities dates back to a time when racial segregation prevailed in the United States. In the 19th century, the doors of higher education were largely closed to African Americans, pushing visionary leaders to create institutions specifically tailored to the needs of black students. These institutions emerged as beacons of hope, offering education and empowerment to a community that had long been denied these opportunities. Importance of Sustaining HBCUs: Today, the relevance of HBCUs remains as vital as ever. These institutions have consistently demonstrated their commitment to providing a nurturing environment that fosters academic excellence, leadership, and cultural pride. HBCUs have produced some of the most influential figures in various fields, from politics and business to arts and sciences. Sustaining HBCUs is not just about preserving history but also ensuring that future generations of African Americans have access to quality education and the tools to break down barriers. The Power of Education: Education has always been a powerful catalyst for change and progress. HBCUs not only provide academic knowledge but also cultivate a strong sense of identity, resilience, and community. In a world that often perpetuates systemic inequalities, education becomes a formidable weapon to challenge the status quo. The upcoming event serves as a reminder of the transformative power that education, especially from HBCUs, holds for individuals and the broader society. Celebrating Black History Month and HBCUs: Black History Month is not only a time to reflect on the past but also an opportunity to celebrate the present and pave the way for the future. By raising awareness about HBCUs during this month, we amplify the voices and contributions of African Americans to the tapestry of American history. The event becomes a platform to showcase the achievements of HBCU alumni and highlight the ongoing importance of supporting these institutions. As we eagerly anticipate our upcoming HBCU event, let us recognize and celebrate the profound impact of Historically Black Colleges & Universities. These institutions stand as living testaments to the strength, resilience, and brilliance of the African American community. Through education, they have transformed lives and shaped history. In the spirit of Black History Month, let us commit to preserving and uplifting HBCUs, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire generations to come. A Life Transformed, A Legacy Honored: Markes Thomas Inducted into the BGCBC Hall of Fame

A Life Transformed, A Legacy Honored: Markes Thomas Inducted into the BGCBC Alumni Hall of Fame A Life Transformed, A Legacy Honored: Markes Thomas Inducted into the BGCBC Hall of Fame Markes Thomas has always believed in the power of possibility and for Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, that belief has grown into a legacy defined by resilience, service, and transformation. This year marks a historic moment as Markes becomes one of the organization’s first-ever Alumni Hall of Fame inductees—a fitting honor for all the years of impact he has had in the community. It’s a recognition not just of professional achievement, but of a life shaped by the very mission he now leads. Markes’s journey didn’t begin in an office—it began in need. At just 13 years old, after the devastating loss of his mother to violence, he found himself searching for stability in the midst of grief. It was then that the Boys & Girls Club became more than a place to go after school—it became his sanctuary. Encouraged by his grandmother, Essie Mae Gantt Thomas, he attended a summer program at the Nan Knox Club formerly called the North West Club. What he found there changed the trajectory of his life. The Club’s director didn’t just offer him a safe space—he offered him responsibility, mentorship, and belief. Markes was given a job, structure, and most importantly, a community that refused to let him drift. “They refused to let me act out after the tragedy,” Markes recalls. “Collectively, they made sure I stayed busy, stayed here, and interacted in programs. That’s why I’m who I am today.” One pivotal moment stayed with him. After an incident at school, his director reminded him of something he had once said—that the Club was his sanctuary, his second home. “He told me, ‘This is like church. Now you have to set the example for others.’” That message became a guiding principle. Raised by strong women—his grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Lee Barnes—Markes was grounded in faith and community. He attended Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, where those early values were reinforced. Today, he continues that spiritual commitment as a Junior Warden at Saint Christopher Episcopal Church, carrying forward the same sense of responsibility and service. His professional journey reflects that same steady growth. Starting at the Harold “Hackie” Reitman, M.D. Club, Markes worked his way through various roles over nearly four decades—learning every layer of the organization, building relationships, and sharpening his leadership along the way. Today, he is the Club Director at the Nan Knox Club / Linda & Douglas Von Allmen Campus, while also overseeing the adjacent Fred DeLuca Teen Center. Known affectionately as “Coach Markes,” he has become a cornerstone of the community a steady presence for young people navigating challenges of their own. Under his leadership, the Club is more than a facility—it’s a foundation. A place where youth are supported, challenged, and inspired to envision something greater for themselves. Markes doesn’t just lead programs—he builds people. He is widely recognized as a community leader, a positive role model, and someone deeply committed to the mission. His story resonates because it mirrors the very youth he now serves. He understands firsthand what it means to face adversity—and more importantly, what it means to overcome it with the right support system. “The Boys & Girls Club provided guidance and leadership for me,” he says. “And it’s our job and responsibility to do the same for this upcoming generation. These children’s futures are in our hands. These are our future doctors, our lawyers, our future nurses—and we have to invest in our future.” His Hall of Fame induction is a full-circle moment. From a young boy seeking refuge to a leader providing it, his journey embodies the idea that sometimes, the place that saves you becomes the place you’re meant to serve. And for countless young people walking through those doors today, Coach Markes is ensuring that sanctuary remains exactly what they need it to be. Learn More

A Club Legacy to President: Celebrating Torey Alston BGCBC Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee A Club Legacy to President: Celebrating Torey Alston BGCBC Alumni Hall of Fame Inductee Torey Alston, President and CEO of Broward College, was inducted into Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Alumni Hall of Fame—an honor that reflects the lasting impact the Club had on shaping his character, leadership, and commitment to service. As a proud alumnus of the Nan Knox Club / Linda & Douglas Von Allmen Campus, Alston distinguished himself early on as a stellar Club member whose dedication to academic success set him apart. His commitment to learning was recognized by mentors who saw in him both discipline and drive. During his time at the Club, Alston developed the leadership skills and sense of responsibility that would guide his future. Through mentorship, positive peer engagement, and a focus on education, he learned the value of hard work, accountability, and giving back. The Club environment helped him build confidence, form meaningful relationships, and understand the importance of uplifting others—principles that continue to define his approach to leadership and community building today. A Broward native and son of community college graduates, Alston has gone on to serve in numerous leadership roles across the State of Florida, always grounded in the lessons he first learned as a young Club member.
